That’s a (Cup)Cake Walk!
Happy Valentine’s Day everyone! In the spirit of the day of
all things sweet, I thought I’d share my thoughts on the latest food fad:
cupcakes! As a self-proclaimed cupcake connoisseur who has lived in cupcake-crazed
cities like NYC and DC, I’ve been around the so-called cupcake block a few
times! And while all cupcakes may seem cute and enticing, I’m sad to say
that not all cupcakes are made equal.
Focusing on DC, this really is a city that is teeming with
cupcakeries. Georgetown, in particular, can boast of the triumvirate: Baked &Wired, Sprinkles, and Georgetown Cupcakes. In this Cupcake Bermuda Triangle,
where diets get easily lost, I’d say that Baked & Wired is my favorite,
hands down. The store has a variety of cupcake flavors with silly names and
amazing tastes, such as Pretty Bitchin, Smurfette, and Razmanian Devil. Red
Velvet, my favorite cupcake flavor, is made to sheer perfection. What I like
best about Baked & Wired is that the cupcakes are light and fluffy instead
of being overly moist and filling. With the relaxed, indie ambiance, Baked and
Wired is the perfect place to grab a (strong) cup of coffee and a light cupcake
snack.
My second favorite cupcake shop has to be Sprinkles, a national chain that has grown in prominence in DC since opening in Georgetown. While the cakes are yummy, Sprinkles excels in its frostings which are the perfect mix of sweet and savory! What makes Sprinkles all the more awesome is that they GIVE AWAY 50 free cupcakes daily if you tell the cashier the secret password posted on their Facebook and Twitter page….now you can’t beat that deal!
There are a lot of fans of Georgetown Cupcakes, especially with its reality show following. But in my personal opinion, the cupcakes are smaller and the cake and frosting aren’t as good as the other two cupcake stores. DC has other cupcakeries as well, such as Hello Cupcake, Red Velvet Cupcakery, Leslie’s Fancy Cakes, and Crumbs (originally from NYC). With all these options, there really is something for everyone as long as you can manage to exercise a bit of self-control (something which is very hard for me, teehee)!
And then of course, there are those scrumptious cupcakes your friends give you to make your Valentine's Day all the sweeter!
