Top Bollywood Rain Songs
Holed
away in our apartments, us East Coast folks are quietly watching as the rain knocks down on our windows, compliments of Hurricane Sandy. Despite this madness, I
can’t help but hum some of my favorite baarish (ie, rain) songs. Bollywood has
always impressed upon us that there is romance everywhere, come hell or high
water (literally)! So before the power goes out, I thought I’d count down some of my
favorite rain songs with you so we can all embrace the Bollywood moment here!
5) Rim
Jhim Rim Jhim from 1942: A Love Story
This song captures the innocence
of budding romance with the rain as an important backdrop. Also, it can’t go
unmentioned that this was probably Manisha Koirala’s last really good movie before she faded away into obscurity.
4) Tip Tip Barsa Pani from Mohra
This song seriously upped the “oomph”
factor about dancing in the rain. With those sensual moves, violent hip gyrations, and dramatic bosom thrusts, you're in for a roller coaster ride of a song. With lyrics that
translate to “the rain started a fire in my heart”, the more-than-suggestive nature of this song is unquestionable!
3) Barso Re from Guru
An iconic rain song from this
generation, this number from Guru has shown that even in a heavy downpour, one
can find a reason to dance your worries away! While everyone else in the video seems to be running for cover, Aishwarya’s effortless moves amid gusts of wind and plunging waterfalls make
me want to join in the fun!
2) Mere
Khwabon Mein Jo Aaye from Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge
To be a true Bollywood star, you
must have at least one good rain song to your name. Kajol has several, from Dekho Zara Dekho in Yeh Dillagi to Dekho Na in Fanaa. But I’d have to go with this
one from Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge because it is the quintessential carefree
rain song! It’s also from one of my favorite movies as a kid and seriously, no
Bollywood countdown is complete with a song from this movie!
1) Pyar
Hua Iqraar Hua from Shree 420
You didn't think we'd forget this one, did you? Probably one of the earliest
Bollywood songs picturized in the rain, this song brings a whole new meaning to
sharing an umbrella-ella-ella with your loved one. The innocence of Nargis and Raj
Kapoor, coupled with the playful scenes, make this song memorable even now decades later.
Honorable Mentions
It was so hard to limit this
list to my top 5 songs, so I have to add a list of honorable mentions. My other
top contenders were these:
Bheegi Bheegi Raaton Mein from
Ajnabee
Aaj Rapat Jaye from Namak Halal
Parbat Se Kaali Ghata from Chandni
Jo Haal Dil Ka from Sarfarosh
Koi Ladki Hai from Dil to Pagal Hai
What are YOUR top Bollywood rain songs?
